Mentoring Youth Voices on Climate Resilience
I had the privilege of mentoring a group of young people as part of the Youth Documentary Initiative, led by Cygnet Film School in the Huon Valley. This community-driven project supports young people in using the power of storytelling and audiovisual skills, from operating a camera to editing, scriptwriting, storyboarding, and crew planning.
This mentoring challenged me to reflect on my time working in the creative industries and audiovisual, and to connect it to today’s sustainability education. One of the biggest challenges in this space is building awareness without overwhelming participants with eco-anxiety.

My work focuses on creating safe, engaging environments where young people can build confidence, identify their individual “superpowers”, strengthen climate literacy, and move from concern to action. By combining storytelling with real-world examples of circular economy and sustainable living, I help participants connect their ideas to meaningful, local impact.
What stood out most was their honesty and courage. These young people are not only aware of the challenges ahead—they are ready to be part of the solution.
This is the kind of work that shifts the narrative from fear to empowerment—and creates a lasting impact at the community level — which is my purpose as a mentor. One piece of feedback I received captures this approach:
“Milca brought warmth, clarity and genuine inspiration to our youth action documentary project. She has a natural ability to empower young people, creating a space where they feel informed, confident and capable of contributing their ideas. Her thoughtful communication and creative vision strengthened not only the session itself, but the direction of the project as a whole.” — Brianna Lory, Cygnet Film School
